About Us

Nied’s Hotel is a family-owned bar, restaurant, and music venue that was established in Lawrenceville in 1941. It was opened by the Nied family as a boarding house and local watering hole. Today, owner Jim Nied continues the tradition of providing great food, service, and hospitality to friends and patrons.

In 2016, Nied’s Hotel was voted Best Bar in the ‘Burgh by the readers of Pittsburgh Magazine. Nied’s is well-known in Pittsburgh for its homestyle cuisine, and the fried fish sandwich is a standout menu item. Pittsburgh Magazine says, “The fish sandwich, proudly proclaimed as ‘famous’ on the walls outside, is the way to go here — giant, filling and comforting.”

Through the years Nied’s Hotel has evolved from just being a friendly neighborhood tavern to becoming a bono fide entertainment destination. Many music legends have passed through our doors, including the resident Nied’s Hotel Band, created and led by John Vento.

With a NO COVER policy and happy hour specials, Nied’s has become the most affordable way to enjoy live music in the city. The Amphitheater is a unique venue adjacent to the Hotel that hosts musicians, comedians, and fundraisers in a relaxing outdoor environment. We also host bands, karaoke, and parties inside the bar, affectionately known as The Ballroom. There are a variety of shows every weekend, so check out the upcoming Events Schedule!

Jim Nied even organizes group trips for his beloved customers, who travel together to destinations such as Atlantic City and Niagara Falls. If you’d prefer to gamble locally, our bar also hosts a variety of online and sports betting lottery games, including Keno.

Whether you’re dining, partying, or performing with us, you’ll always be treated like family at Nied’s!

Back in 1941 Ted and his son Paul Nied were forced to relocate their Tavern from 4th and Dixon Street in Homestead to the friendly confines of 5438 Butler Street in Lawrenceville. This move was necessitated by the soon to be developed US Steel industry in the neighborhood underneath the High Level Bridge. Nied’s Hotel was under the careful watch of Paul for nearly 70 years. Paul’s son Jim followed in his father’s footsteps beginning in 1977 after returning from service in the military. Today, Jim Nied continues to run Nied’s Hotel in Lawrenceville and welcomes patrons from all over the Greater Pittsburgh Area and beyond.

Through the years, Nied’s has grown from being a neighborhood tavern and boarding house to becoming a renowned entertainment venue. First came group outings to ballgames, then trips to out of state race tracks, then ultimately travel Atlantic City and destinations as far away as Alaska!

As Nied’s Hotel continued to evolve, a close friend of the family, Bob Lokar Jr., promoted this neighborhood bar to the legendary band leader John Vento. The community at Nied’s inspired John’s next CD, and from there he formed the Nied’s Hotel Band. John Vento joined forces with the best national recording artists around and set out to take the Pittsburgh music scene by storm! Focusing on becoming a philanthropic performing group, the band has played many successful shows from Cleveland to Sewickley Heights and raised funds for organizations such as Lupus, Parkinson’s, and Toys for Tots. The Nied’s Hotel Band really puts the FUN into fundraising! The band also helped fund the creation of the Acoustically Perfect Lawrenceville Amphitheater, which is now a mainstay of entertainment at Nied’s Hotel.

Another musical legend that has been instrumental to the success of Nied’s Hotel has been country singer Slim Forsythe. Slim performs frequent musical shows at Nied’s both solo and in collaboration with a variety of artists. Notably, his video for WQED TV called “Live From Nied’s Hotel” even earned a Mid-Atlantic Emmy for Arts Program nomination.

Over the years, Nied’s Hotel has seen a variety of people and groups pass through its doors. And while its Lawrenceville neighborhood has changed, one thing has remained the same—Nied’s Hotel has always been a place that’s welcomed anyone who wants to stop in for a drink, a meal, or just a chat. Come on by and see what we’re all about!
